You may not worry about your data usage if you have an unlimited plan. But if you use a limited one, you need to be careful about all the bytes you spend. Of course you can eliminate using data-hungry apps like YouTube or Instagram, but there are other things you can do as well to reduce data usage. If you have an iPhone and want to want out ways to reduce iPhone data usage, you are in the right place.
Spot out the data-hungry apps
Do you want to find out which apps are eating up you data? Head to Settings > Cellular and you will see a list of your apps. Under each app you can see how much data you have used for each of them. You can toggle off any of them that you think is not having a fair share.
Restrict iTunes and App Store downloads
You can prevent iTunes and the App Store from downloading music, movies, apps and so on when you are away from a WiFi signal. This will help you to reduce iPhone data usage on unwanted stuff.
To disable cellular data for iTunes and App Store downloads, go to Settings > iTunes & App Store and toggle off Use Cellular Data.
Turn off background app refresh
iOS apps update data for you in the background so that next time you visit any of them, you can have the latest news. This is a cool feature but it comes with a cost. Turning it off helps you to have a longer battery life and less data usage.
Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You can choose to disable it completely or turn it off for specific apps.
Don’t stream music to reduce iPhone data usage
Streaming music on the go can seriously add up to your data usage. Most music apps like Spotify or Apple Music allows you to restrict streaming to WiFi only. For Apple Music, go to Settings > Music. In the Streaming & Downloads section, you’ll see two settings if the first is enabled. The first, Use Cellular Data, lets you disable streaming via a cellular connection entirely.
Also, if you are in a pinch with your data limits you can stream music on Apple Music with lower quality. Go to Music and find and disable High Quality on Cellular.
Disable WiFi assist
When you are having weak WiFi signal, Cellular data comes to help and prevent pages from loading slowly. Of course this feature is amazing but sometimes your cellular data may be assisting more than you need and running up data charges.
To disable Wi-Fi Assist, go to Settings > Cellular and scroll all the way to the bottom to turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
