Long ago when Facebook was the only used application and there weren’t any special messengers like whatsApp or Telegram, people used to chat and communicate with others on Facebook. By extension of technology and increasing the number of chat messengers, Facebook decided to take the messenger out of the app and make it an independent application named Messenger. One of the reason of this event is because by coming of Instagram, Facebook is not as much as well known as before. Another reason can be because of the filtering of the app in some countries. Anyway, there is another chat application which is added to the list of messengers. Now we are going to check the new features of messenger application.
What does Messenger application do?
Once you have installed the messenger, your contacts will answer you faster on average. It also enables you to text, voice or video call your friends faster for free by using your existing data plan. You can reach your friends on their phone or web, so they will never miss your messages. One of the good things about this app is that it can inform you who has seen your messages and who has not. One of the perfect features that attracted many users is the most interesting and exciting stickers and emojis and gifs which are not available in any other apps. Using this messenger, you can share photos, videos, stickers, gifs and more. You can also include friends of your friends in your conversation. Like other messengers, you can create groups but unlike the others, you can view your most important group conversations in one place. Messenger application enables you to access your messages and conversations when you open the app.
How to use messenger application?
This application is completely free for Android and IOS users. Once you have installed the app, you have two ways for registering. One is with phone number which make all your contacts available. Another is with Facebook account which asks your profile information and as you register you will have all the list of your Facebook friends. One of the similarities of messenger to Facebook is that users have to be 13 years old or more. This is because of some risks that all the messengers involve. Some of the common risks are like cyberbullying, experiencing or sharing inappropriate content and chatting with strangers. In order to help avoid these problems, the same rules should apply to all online interactions for young people. Only share data with those who you trust in real life, think before you click and report any inappropriate data or messages to a trusted adult.
Risks of Messenger application
There are some other risks more specific to the Messenger app which parents should be also be aware of:
Facebook privacy setting
When set up with a Facebook account, the Messenger app can sync with all of your phone book contacts in addition to Facebook friends. If you are concerned about who might be in your child’s contacts list or would prefer to limit who your child’s contacts to only Facebook friends, this can be done by skipping the sync with contacts option when downloading the app or turning it off in the settings. Go to Settings > People > Turn Synced Contacts off.
Privacy setting of who can contact me?
By default this Facebook setting is set to ‘basic filtering’ – which means friends and people you may know can contact you on Facebook and on Messenger. To avoid risk of contact from someone your child may not know, we recommend that switch the setting to strict filtering (only friends can send messages to the account). This only applies when a user has set up a Messenger account using Facebook. To limit who can contact your child:
Go to Settings > Select Privacy > Select edit on ‘Whose messages do I want filtered into my Inbox?’ (this can be found in the Who can contact me section’) > Switch from basic filtering to strict filtering.
The Messenger app allows users to send other users their location in message. You can do this by using GPS technology available on most devices now. Parents may want to disable location services on their child’s device to avoid any potential risk. On most devices you can find the location services in the phone settings. Simply disable the ‘access to my location’ option.
